The Coflore Agitated Cell Reactor (ACR) is a dynamically-mixed flow reactor comprised of ten distinct reactor cells in series, operating as ten CSTRs for plug flow performance. Interstage channels between each reactor cell reduce the uncontrolled bypassing and back-mixing associated with single tube CSTR designs. Coflore's patented agitation technology provides efficient active-mixing even at very low flow rates, providing versatility for handling a variety of single-phase and multi-phase reaction mixtures, including slurries.

The Coflore ACR flow reactor is ideal for establishing and developing continuous processes prior to scale up, or when only limited quantities of material are available or required. Processes developed on an ACR platform have a straight-forward path to scale up via the larger volume Coflore ATR pilot-scale plug flow reactor and Coflore RTR production scale plug flow reactor.

Compatible with a wide scope of chemical processes for residence times ranging from seconds to hours, the Coflore ACR is extremely versatile. A wide-range of reactions have been performed in the Coflore ACR including: hydrogenations; Grignard reactions; transesterifications; biocatalysis; nitrations and many more. Multi-phase mixtures including slurries and gases can be processed with low risk of blocking or fouling, making the ACR ideal for heterogeneous catalysis. Check out our Publications page for reaction examples.

The ACR Reactor Cell Block is highly configurable, with variable working reactor volumes from 30 to 90 mL achieved using variable volume agitators housed within each reactor cell (10%, 30%, 50%, 70% agitator volumes available). Each reactor cell has its own dedicated side port that can be utilised as required, i.e. to house a thermocouple or for reagent injection into the reactor. In addition, the glass windows can be replaced with injection nozzles for further versatility of set up.

The ACR reactor cell block can be completely disassembled making all wetted surfaces and components easily accessible for cleaning.

Minimal set up is required to run chemistry in the ACR, with a low pressure drop enabling wide pump compatibility (including gear, diaphragm, syringe, peristaltic pumps and more).  The reaction residence time is determined by the pump flow rate and not the size or length of the reactor process channels, allowing the user to easily screen a range of residence times on demand. Mixing efficiency and plug flow performance is maintained by default, irrespective of flow rate.
